Weigle , and Jian Wu have been awarded a $10,000 COVA CCI Academic Curriculum Development Grant ( RFP COVACCI-21-05 ) with their proposal "Web Science and Web Security".  The deliverables of this project will include preparing and packaging for use outside of ODU four existing Web Science and Digital Libraries (WS-DL) Research Group courses that involve Web Security. Recently, WS-DL’s research and course offerings have moved toward the intersection of the web and security. In the process of developing and delivering our courses, it has become clear that we needed to offer a 400/500 level course focused on web client security .  Given the central role that the web plays in our daily commerce, education, and entertainment, we should be doing a better job producing BS and MS students with expertise in securing web applications. 2020-01-04: Four WS-DL classes Offered for Spring 2020

"Is the pipeline literally running from your laptop?" "Don't be silly, my laptop disconnects far too often to host a service we rely on. It's running on my phone." Four WS-DL classes are being offered for Spring 2020: CS 395 Research Methods in Data and Web Science is taught by Dr. Michael L. Nelson , Wednesdays 4:20pm - 7pm.  This class will introduce undergraduates to writing proposals, reading & writing papers, giving presentations, Python, Web APIs, reproducibility, LaTeX, and GitHub. CS 432/532 Web Science is taught by by Dr. Michele C. Weigle , Tues/Thurs, 11am-12:15pm.  This class explores web phenomena with a variety of data science tools such as Python, R, D3, ML, and IR.   CS 480/580 Intro to Artificial Intelligence is taught by Dr. Vikas Ashok , Tues/Thur, 3-4:15pm.  The class will cover fundamental concepts, principles, and techniques in Artificial Intelligence. 2014-11-09: Four WS-DL Classes for Spring 2015

We're excited to announce that four Web Science & Digital Library ( WS-DL ) courses will be offered in Spring 2015: CS 418 " Web Programming ", MW 3-4:15pm (CRN 24656 ), will be offered by Mat Kelly .  This will be an updated version of Dr. Weigle's class from last spring .  There will not be a 518 version of this class.  CS 495/595 " Big Data ", W 4:20-7pm (CRNs 29955 & 29956 ), will be offered by Dr. Charles "Chuck" Cartledge , a summer 2014 PhD graduate .  Chuck will adapt this class from Shahram Mohrehkesh 's class from spring 2014 . This fall, only one WS-DL class will be offered: CS 495/595 Introduction to Web Science , Thursdays, 4:20-7:00, r. 2120 This class approaches the Web as a phenomena to be studied in its own right .  In this class we will explore a variety of tools (e.g., Python , R , D3 ) as well as applications (e.g., social networks , recommendations , clustering , classification ) that are commonly used in analyzing the socio-technical structures of the Web.  The class will be similar to the fall 2013 offering.  Right now we're planning on offering in spring 2015: CS 418 Web Programming  CS 725/825 Information Visualization CS 751/851 Introduction to Digital Libraries --Michael

Two WS-DL classes are offered for Fall 2013: CS 725/825 - Information Visualization , Dr. Weigle CS 495/595 - Introduction to Web Science , Dr. Nelson Information Visualization has been taught twice before, but with a 795/895 course number.  This semester will be the first time that Web Science has been taught at ODU, although the course is based on Dr. McCown 's Spring 2013 class at Harding University. --Michael

2011-12-14: CS 495/595 Web Server Development for Spring 2012

The only WS-DL related class that will be offered in spring 2012 is CS 495/595 "Web Server Development". I had planned to offer CS 751/851 "Introduction to Digital Libraries, but I've taught that the last two springs and it has been a while since I've taught the web server development class (the last offering was actually from Martin Klein in spring 2010 ). The premise of this course is that the best way to really get to know HTTP is to build a fully-functional web server from scratch in the language of your choice. That sounds simple enough, but it becomes quite challenging, in part because if you do a poor job at design at the beginning you have to live with the consequences the entire semester. On the other hand, do a good job up front and each assignment will just drop into place (hello, software design ).
