Covid isn't over, but in 2022 things with the Web Science and Digital Libraries Group (WS-DL) have been slowly returning to normal.  We graduated one PhD student, one MS student, and added six graduate students and two undergraduates to the group. Students and Faculty We had one PhD defense this year, and unfortunately it was over Zoom.  Hopefully we can get back to in-person defenses and the after-defense celebration in 2023.   Corren McCoy defended her dissertation on 2022-11-16 .  Corren was already a Vice President with G2Ops , and will continue with them after her graduation .   MD Sami Uddin defended his thesis on 2022-03-22 and took a position with VMRC  after graduating.  Congratulations and Happy Commencement Day to Dr. @CorrenMcCoy , my 10th PhD graduate! @ODU @ODUSCI @oducs @WebSciDL pic.twitter.com/qZ5GXQL3qW — Michele Weigle (@weiglemc) December 17, 2022 We did not add additional faculty to @WebSciDL this year, still remaini...

Image
On December 17, 2022, I walked in ODU's commencement ceremony as Dr. Michele Weigle 's 10th Ph.D. graduate. The number 10 is some what fitting as 10 years have passed since I started taking doctoral level courses at ODU, first as a non-degree student, before officially enrolling in the Computer Science program. On November 16, 2022, I defended my dissertation research " A Relevance Model for Threat-Centric Ranking of Cybersecurity Vulnerabilities  ( video )."  I sincerely appreciate the willingness of Dr. Weigle, Dr. Nelson , and the Web Science and Digital Libraries ( WS-DL ) research group to join me in tackling a cybersecurity challenge. My dissertation committee members, Dr...

This summer (summer of 2022), we (Himarsha Jayanetti, Gavindya Jayawardena, and Yasith Jayawardana) got the opportunity to intern at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) under the Graduate Research Assistant Program . Himarsha and Yasith worked as a part of the Library's Research and Prototyping Team  (Proto Team) under the supervision of Drs. Martin Klein and Shawn M. Jones . Gavindya was supervised by Brian Cain on the Institutional Scientific Content (ISC) Team. Each of us was responsible for one of the three main components that make up the "PDFServer". What is the PDFServer? PDFServer is a prototype to support LANL's Review and Approval System for Scientific and Technical Information (RASSTI) , which is the starting point for collecting LANL’s documented scientific output and it provides workflows for authors and reviewers. The overall architecture of the PDFServer is displayed in Figure 1. We selected Laravel 9.11 , which is a PHP web application framewo...
