2016-10-26: They should not be forgotten!

It was very tough for me to look at his smile and realize that he will not be in this world again. It got worse for me when I read his story and many others who had died defending the future of my home country, Egypt, hoping to draw a better future for their kids. Ahmed Basiony, one of Egypt’s great artists, was killed by the Egyptian Regime on the January 28th, 2011. One of the main reasons that drove Basiony to participate in the protests is filming police beatings to document the protests. While he was filming, he also used his camera during the demonstration to zoom on the soldiers and warn the people around him so they take cautions before they had gunfire. 2013-05-07: Who Is Archiving Your Tweets?

Who is archiving your tweets? You're probably thinking "the Library of Congress".  And you're right, since 2010 they have been (see the announcements from Twitter and LC ).  But LC is currently providing access only to researchers, and the scale of the archive makes access challenging (see LC's January 2013 white paper that provides a status update on the project). To say I think this joint project between LC and Twitter is exciting and important is an understatement; I could go on about the scholarly importance, the cultural and technological record, the phenomena of social media, etc.  So I was surprised (but in retrospect, should not have been) when almost immediately afterwards projects like noloc.org surfaced so you could opt out of the archiving of your public tweets. However, while you might be able to prevent LC from archiving your tweets, companies like Topsy are archiving them, or at least some of them.  Tospy is one of my new, favorite sites

Digital Preservation 2012 was held July 24-25 at the Sheraton Pentagon City in Arlington, Virginia. Previously the NDSA/NDIIPP ( @ndsa2 / @ndiipp ) Partner Meetup (see our trip report from 2011 ), this year's theme was "access to digital content under stewardship". A wide range of presentations were given on the full range of digital preservation topics. Four representatives from the ODU Web Sciences and Digital Libraries group attended to present their research and recent work in one of various realms within the field. WS-DL's Contributions to Digital Preservation 2012 Mat Kelly ( @machawk1 ) presented a demo of a Google Chrome extension he developed called WARCreate , as a further extension to the initial poster/demo presented at WS-DL's trip to JCDL this past June. WARCreate allows a user to create a Web ARChive (WARC) file from any viewable webpage. Mat's main focus was on preserving content behind aut
