2017-12-03: Introducing Docker - Application Containerization & Service Orchestration

Image
For the last few years, Docker , the application containerization technology, has been gaining a lot of attraction from the DevOps community and lately it has made its way to the academia and research community as well. I have been following it since its inception in 2013. For the last couple years, it has become a daily driver for me. At the same time, I have been encouraging my colleagues to use Docker in their research projects. As a result, we are gradually moving away from one virtual machine (VM) per project to a swarm of nodes running containers of various projects and services. If you have accessed MemGator , CarbonDate , Memento Damage , Story Graph or some other WS-DL services lately, you have been served from our Docker deployment. We even have an on-demand PHP/MySQL application deployment system using Docker for the CS418 - Web Programming course . I ( @ibnesayeed ) have been selected as the @Docker Campus Ambassador for Old Dominion University! /cc @ODU @od...

2016-09-13: Memento and Web Archiving Colloquium at UVa

Image
Yesterday, September 12, I went to the University of Virginia to give a colloquium at the invitation of Robin Ruggaber to talk with her staff about Memento, Web Archiving, and related technologies.  I also had the pleasure of meeting with Worthy Martin of the CS department and the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities .  I met Robin at CNI Spring 2016 and she was intrigued by our work at using storytelling to summarize archival collections , and was hoping to apply it to their Archive-It collections (which are currently not public).  My presentation yesterday was more of an overview of web archiving,  although the discussion did cover various details, including a proposal for Memento versioning in Fedora .  The Memento Protocol and Research Issues With Web Archiving from Michael Nelson --Michael

On Wednesday, August 5, 2015 Herbert Van de Sompel (Los Alamos National Laboratory) will give a colloquium in the ODU Computer Science Department entitled "A Perspective on Archiving the Scholarly Web".  It will be held in the third floor E&CS conference room (r. 3316) at 11am.  Space is somewhat limited (the first floor auditorium is being renovated), but all are welcome to attend.  The abstract for his talk is:  A Perspective on Archiving the Scholarly Web As the scholarly communication system evolves to become natively web-based and starts supporting the communication of a wide variety of objects, the manner in which its essential functions -- registration, certification, awareness, archiving -- are fulfilled co-evolves.  Illustrations of the changing implementation of these functions will be used to arrive at a high-level characterization of a future scholarly communication system and of the objects that will be communicated. The focus will then s...
