Hello Everyone! I am Jhon G. Botello from Colombia. I am an Engineer with a Master's in Industrial Engineering. I obtained these degrees at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia. Recently, I started a new chapter in my academic life by joining the Web Science and Digital Libraries (WS-DL) research group at Old Dominion University (ODU) as a Ph.D. student in Computer Science under the supervision of Dr. Michele Weigle .  My interest in the field of Computer Science (CS) stems from the growing, important, and interesting relevance of technology in our society. Computer Science plays a crucial role in process automation, decision-making, and complex problem-solving. I believe that by combining my skills in Industrial Engineering, focused on data science and analysis, multivariate statistics, modeling, and simulation, with a Ph.D. in Computer Science , I will be able to contribute to the development of solutions to challenges of great interest in society. I am taking

https://xkcd.com/2085/   The Internet Archive is hosting their annual celebration this week ( October 12, 2023 ), and I wanted to take this opportunity to both 1) encourage your attendance (virtual for most of us, but if you're in San Francisco, you can attend in person), and 2) express my appreciation and gratitude for continued existence of the Internet Archive, their evolving products and services, and their support of the research community.    The ongoing devolvement of Twitter into 4chan has caused me to reflect on the platforms, services, and corpuses on which I have built a research program over the last 20+ years.  Discussing the Twitter situation will be the topic of a future post, but here I want to laud the Internet Archive, specifically the Wayback Machine, and by extension, the suite of other public web archives, such as Archive.Today , Arquivo.pt , and the many members of IIPC .  In the past I've referred to the Internet Archive as the " Walter Cronkite o

According to the saying, “there is a first time for everything”, so far, the year 2023 has provided me with several exciting first-time experiences. Becoming an international student and being able to study at an R1 institute by joining ODU are at the top of this list. For my very first year here at ODU, I am taking below courses for the Fall semester 2023. CS620 - Introduction to Data Science and Analytics (by Dr. Yi He ) CS834 - Introduction to Information Retrieval (by Dr. Jian Wu ) Also, I am working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at the Department of Computer Science, ODU for the class CS462/562 Cybersecurity Fundamentals in this Fall 2023. Apart from the above course related work, and th
