2022-05-31: Multi-Disciplinary Reading Patterns of Digital Documents

Image
As researchers, we acquire new developments in our fields through reading scientific literature. Even though we assume the reading and cognitive behaviors to be stochastic, recent studies reveal otherwise. Over the recent periods, we ( NirdsLab , WS-DL ) have been studying these patterns of researchers using eye-tracking and published a series of studies highlighting our findings. This blog will summarize our studies, highlighting our discoveries, realizations, and future directions.   For the discussion, we consider three peer-reviewed poster publications. Analyzing the Effect of Reading Patterns using Eye Tracking Measures ( DOI , JCDL 2020 , Best Poster ) Analyzing Unconstrained Reading Patterns of Digital Documents Using Eye Tracking ( DOI , JCDL 2021 , Best Poster ) Multidisciplinary Reading Patterns of Digital Documents ( DOI , ETRA 2022 , In Press) We will briefly review each publication, highlighting key features, novelties, and limitations. Then we identify potenti...

Members of the Web Science and Digital Libraries Research Group  (WSDL) attended the workshops , tutorials , paper sessions , posters and demonstrations virtually via Zoom. Muntabir Choudhury wrote an excellent trip report covering the JCDL 2021 main conference. The JCDL workshop, September 30, 2021, on “ Extraction and Evaluation of Knowledge Entities from Scientific Documents (EEKE2021) ” was organized by Dr. Chengzhi Zhang , Dr. Philipp Mayr , Dr. Wei Lu , and Dr. Yi Zhang with an aim to...

2021-10-14: Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) 2021 Trip Report

(source:  https://2021.jcdl.org/ ) The 2021 ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL 2021) was hosted virtually due to the global pandemic by the School of Information Science of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) between September 27-30, 2021. This year our members of the  Web Science and Digital Libraries Research Group (WSDL) attended paper sessions, posters and demo sessions, workshops, and tutorials, where researchers from multiple disciplines presented their findings virtually via Zoom room through the Conference Virtual Platform ( RDMobile ). The posters and demo session took place via Zoom and Gather.town . This year, seven papers (5 long and 2 short) plus four posters  from our WSDL group were accepted to JCDL 2021. Unlike previous years , we did not feature any students or faculty in this year's JCDL doctoral consortium. We are hopeful to resume it next year. Day 1 Tutorial 1 Day 1 kicked off with Tutorials and th...
