The ODU Teacher Professional Development Workshop was a 3-day program conducted from August 2 th - August 4 th at the Open Research Lab (OR Lab) of the E&CS Building of ODU. It was funded by the Virginia Space Grant Consortium , and was conducted by Dr. Sampath Jayarathna in collaboration with Dr. Stacie Ringleb and Dr. Robert Ash at ODU. The goal of this workshop was to allow secondary-school teachers in the Hampton roads area to learn a) coding in Python, b) basics of the engineering design process, and c) programming with drones (specifically, DJI Tello ). Teachers from 4 schools in Norfolk ( Academy for Discovery , Blair Middle School , Crossroads School , Lake Taylor School , and Norview High School ), 3 schools in Virginia Beach ( Bayside High School , Landstown High School , and Old Donation School ), and 2 schools in Chesapeake ( Grassfield High Sc...

2019-08-07: Invited Talk at ODU CS Summer Research Workshop: Introducing EEG in Data Science

The Department of Computer Science at ODU has been conducting summer workshops over the past few years for selected undergraduate student groups from India. During this period, they are provided with on-premise accommodation and are arranged to work closely with research groups. Researchers from various groups at ODU present their work and ongoing research to them. Some students who participated in this program in the past have already joined graduate programs at ODU. Ajay Gupta, the Director of Computer Resources at the Department of Computer Science, ODU plays a significant role in conducting this event. Overall, the program has been a great encouragement for students to engage in research. Just shared my summer workshop presentation "Introduction to Data Science with EEG" on SlideShare. @WebSciDL https://t.co/MHuyU4k8dO — Yasith Jayawardana (@yasithmilinda) August 7, 2019 This year, the summer workshop group comprised of 25 undergraduates from three universities: ...

This summer 2019, ten students from B.N.M Institute of technolog y , fourteen students from  Acharya Institute of Technology , and one student from  Ramaiah Institute of Technology participated for the Summer Research Workshop organized by  Ajay Gupta  and the CS department at ODU. Over the past few years, this workshop has enabled participants to collaborate with various research groups and join ODU for graduate degrees. One of the main goals of this annual workshop is to  encourage the undergraduate students to actively engage in research activities. ⁦ @Gavindya2 ⁩ presenting about Eye Tracking in predicting ADHD. 2018-07-22: Tic-Tac-Toe and Magic Square Made Me a Problem Solver and Programmer

Image
" How did you learn programming? ", a student asked me in a recent summer camp. Dr. Yaohang Li organized the Machine Learning and Data Science Summer Camp  for High School students of the Hampton Roads metropolitan region at the Department of Computer Science, Old Dominion University  from June 25 to July 9, 2018. The camp was funded by the  Virginia Space Grant Consortium . More than 30 students participated in it. They were introduced to a variety of topics such as Data Structures, Statistics, Python, R, Machine Learning, Game Programming, Public Datasets, Web Archiving, and Docker etc. in the form of discussions, hands-on labs, and lectures by professors and graduate students. I was invited to give a lecture about my research and Docker . At the end of my talk I solicited questions and distributed Docker swag. The question "How did you learn programming?" led me to draw Tic-Tac-Toe Game and a 3x3 Magic Square on the white board. Then I told them a mo...

2017-08-14: Introducing Web Archiving and Docker to Summer Workshop Interns

Image
Last Wednesday, August 9, 2017, I was invited to give a talk to some summer interns of the Computer Science Department at Old Dominion University. Every summer our department invites some undergrad students from India and hosts them for about a month to work on some projects under a research lab here as summer interns. During this period, various research groups introduce their work to those interns to encourage them to become potential graduate applicants. Those interns also act as academic ambassadors who motivate their colleagues back in India for higher studies. This year, Mr. Ajay Gupta invited a group of 20 students from  Acharya Institute of Technology and B.N.M. Institute of Technology and supervised them during their stay at  Old Dominion University . Like the last year, I was selected from the Web Science and Digital Libraries Research Group again to introduce them with the concept of web archiving and various researches of our lab. An overview of the talk ...

2016-09-27: Introducing Web Archiving in the Summer Workshop

Image
For the last few years the Department of Computer Science at Old Dominion University invites a group of undergrad students from India and hosts them in the summer. They work closely with a research group on some relevant projects. Additionally, researchers from different research groups in the departments present their work to the guest students twice a week and introduce various different projects that they are working on. The goal of this practice is to allow them to collaborate with graduate students of the department and to encourage them for research studies. The invited students also act as ambassadors to share their experience with their colleagues and spread the word out when they go back to India. This year a group of 16 students from Acharya Institute of Technology and B.N.M. Institute of Technology  visited Old Dominion University , they were hosted under the supervision of Ajay Gupta . They worked in the areas of Sensor Networks and Mobil Application Develop...
