2024-01-23: ACM SIGCHI conference on Engineering Interactive Computing Systems (EICS) 2023 - Swansea, Wales, UK Trip Report

Image
We're happy that our research paper, titled " Enabling Customization of Discussion Forums for Blind Users " has been recognized at EICS 2023  which happened in Swansea, UK. Our paper focuses on making online discussion platforms more usable for people who are blind. The conference is well-known for its thorough distribution of research findings in human-computer interface and software engineering. This conference serves as a hub, bringing together many researchers and experts in the field, encouraging collaboration, and providing a platform for the exchange of knowledge and creative ideas. Being a part of this conference provides us with a great chance to discuss our results and work with others who are dedicated to enhancing technology for all users. Workshops: This year's edition of EICS Conference is about to start with the Doctoral Consortium! We are looking forward to lively discussions and a great conference @SwanseaUni #ComputationalFoundry #BayCampus pic.tw...

2024-01-23: International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) 2023 - Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), Australia Trip Report

Image
The 28th annual Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) conference , held at the University of Technology Sydney in Sydney, Australia, stands as one of the most notable and major conferences in the realm of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). I am really fortunate that our paper, " AutoDesc: Facilitating Convenient Perusal of Web Data Items for Blind Users ," was accepted at this important conference. The presentation of our work on March 28, 2023, gave me an opportunity to interact with some of the field's most well-known authors and experts.  #IUI2023 venue, 7th floor of the 10th building at UTS https://t.co/gSLjXhJHrD @ACMIUI pic.twitter.com/6Y1pVey72C — Yong Zheng (@yongzhengme) March 26, 2023 Opening at #IUI2023 pic.twitter.com/FTYXUjjVxa — Dr Simone Stumpf (@DrSimoneStumpf) March 27, 2023   Workshops : We are excited to offer 9 excellent workshops and tutorials this year! 🥳 Mark your calendar! 📅 Come and join us! https://t.co/6LhfSyEaXW #iui2023 #hci #artificialin...

2024-01-19: Paper Summary of "Overcoming Barriers to Information Exchange on the Web" by Ayush Goel

Image
Fig. 1: Figure 7 from " Sprinter: Speeding Up High-Fidelity Crawling of the Modern Web " Introduction      Dr. Ayush Goel is a recent Ph.D graduate from the University of Michigan’s Systems Lab , studying under Dr. Harsha V. Madhyastha and Dr. Ravi Netravali , now working at Hewlett-Packard Labs as a Research Scientist. While the UMich Systems Lab does not necessarily work on Web archiving, much of their work has overlap with our own here at the Web Science and Digital Libraries group. I first became aware of Dr. Goel’s work through his previous work and publication, “ Jawa: Web Archival in the Era of JavaScript ”, which was mentioned by former WS-DL alumnus Emily Escamilla in her 2022 IIPC Web Archiving Conference trip report , and again in her 2023 IIPC WAC trip report . The Jawa project is an impressive accomplishment on its own but it is only a piece of Dr. Goel’s contributed body of work. With impacts on my own research work and long-lasting impacts for the We...

2024-01-16: ALICE - AI Leveraged Information Capture and Exploration

Image
Organizational presentations often carry a wealth of data: images, charts, and text that tell a compelling story or present findings. Programs and projects routinely rely on meetings to address various problems that arise in addition to disseminating information about our work. However, the information contained in the slide decks associated with these meetings and presentations tends to get lost after the fact. One cause of this information loss may be that slides represent sparse information about what is being spoken about during these meetings.  In this blog post, I introduce the ALICE (AI Leveraged Information Capture and Exploration) system, my proposed solution for capturing and managing knowledge and data from sources that, historically, have not been comprehensively archived. The primary challenge addressed by ALICE is the prevalent issue of information loss in presentation slide decks following their related meetings or presentations. This system is designed to methodical...
