ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2023) marks the 28th annual gathering of the intelligent interfaces community, offering a prominent global platform for showcasing research and advancements in intelligent user interfaces. It is a leading international forum where the worlds of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) converge. The conference was held at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) . The conference welcomes contributions from diverse disciplines, including psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, and beyond. It is a collaborative space where experts from various fields intersect to explore the frontiers of technology and user experience. Our research paper, " AutoDesc: Facilitating Convenient Perusal of Web Data Items for Blind Users ," was published at IUI 2023 . 1217 authors from 45 countries contributed their papers to the conference, showcasing a rich and diverse in...

2023-12-29: Paper Summary: “A Systematic Review of Reproducibility Research in Natural Language Processing”

Image
In the quest for scientific progress, the replicability crisis has become an increasingly prevalent concern. To characterize and analyze this issue in the field of natural language processing (NLP), Anya Belz , Shubham Agarwal , Anastasia Shimorina , and Ehud Reiter wrote a research review article, " A Systematic Review of Reproducibility Research in Natural Language Processing " (Belz et al., 2021) . This study navigated through the intricacies of NLP research, focusing on the challenges, initiatives, and diverse terminology used in the literature. Additionally, they explored the specificities of reproduction studies under various conditions, and the impact of seemingly minor code differences on the reliability and generalizability of NLP endeavors. Data and Methodology The research team employed a structured review with a systematic process, using a search in the ACL Anthology for papers with the terms “reproduc” or “replica” .  This initial search yielded 47 papers, fr...

2023-12-27: Akshay Kolgar Nayak (PhD in Computer Science)

Image
Greetings, fellow bloggers. I am Akshay Kolgar Nayak , and I am pursuing my passion as a PhD student in computer science at the Old Dominion University , Norfolk, VA. Under the guidance of Dr. Vikas Ashok , I conduct research in the field of human-computer interaction, specializing my current focus on developing intelligent assistive technologies to promote accessible means of learning and education for the less-abled population. I kickstarted my engineering adventure with a bachelor's degree in computer science and engineering from Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. My interest in coding was first ignited during high school when Java programming was first introduced as part of the curriculum. However, I believe my enduring fascination with how our minds work, human psychology, and neuroscience later fueled my passion for deep learning and artificial intelligence. Following the completion of my undergraduate degree in 2020, I embarked on my pro...

2023-12-27: Summer Research Internship at ISG - Information Services Group, Inc.

Image
As I consider my time as an ISG GovernX summer 2023 research intern, although it was based in Stamford, Connecticut, USA, I worked remotely from Virginia. I am swept away into a domain where contract management, innovation, and the application of cutting-edge technologies intersect with the application of coding expertise. Engaging in the development of a Clause Recommendation System during my internship not only enhanced my technical skills but also expanded my understanding of reality-based implementations about natural language processing and data analysis. My primary objectives were: to assist the team with my coding expertise and convert client requirements into coding tasks. By testing various methodologies and applying my solutions to resolve tangible challenges, I developed professionally as a programmer and demonstrated the efficacy of my contributions to the group. One key project I worked on was the Clause Recommendation System. I played a role in building its essential par...
