2022-07-22: Summary of "Web Archiving and Search Personalized"

Image
The Web Archiving and Search Personalized system automatically captures, archives, and indexes pages for both full-text search and replay. (Source: Kiesel et al., Figure 1a) According to a study conducted by Teevan et al. in 2007, 39% of search queries represent users trying to re-find previously viewed pages [1]. One approach to supporting users in this task is automatic personal web archiving. Each page that the user visits is saved, so that it can be found later, similar to an automated version of the "bookmark as archive" feature in Mabe et al.’s Memento-aware browser prototype [2]. However, creating a system that can save web pages as they are viewed, index them for full-text search, and replay them later is an ambitious goal. Johannes Kiesel ( @KieselJohannes ), Arjen P. de Vries ( @arjenpdevries ), Matthias Hagen ( @matthias_hagen ), Benno Stein ( @bennostein ), and Martin Potthast ( @martinpotthast ) created a prototype system for this purpose in their paper “Web Arc...

2022-07-19: Review of "Facebook has started to encrypt links to counter privacy-improving URL Stripping"

Image
This figure, from the original blog post , does not concern "fbclid" for external links.  The top URL is a deep link to this post on facebook.com and the URL shown in the dev tools is for @ghacksnet Facebook account page .  Both URLs still have tracking URL query parameters of the form: " ?__cft__[0]=... ". Yesterday I saw " Facebook Is Now Encrypting Links to Prevent URL Stripping ", tweeted by @schneierblog , which was a summary of the original blog post of the same name, " Facebook has started to encrypt links to counter privacy-improving URL Stripping ," by Martin Brinkmann ( @ghacks ).  I read with interest because of the implications on web archiving, since lookup by URL is almost exclusively the manner of accessing web archives.  In summary, I cannot replicate any of the statements in the original blog post by Brinkmann.     The blog post begins with a discussion about Firefox's recent update which allows the user to specify strip...

2022-07-19: Drone Programming Studio Funded by ODU Faculty Innovator Grant Program 2022

Image
Figure: DJI Tello Programmable Drone We are very excited to receive Faculty Innovator Grant 2022  funded by the Center for Learning and Teaching (CLT) at Old Dominion University. The goal of this grant is to help faculty to explore innovative uses of technology to improve student learning. This is in collaboration with Dr. Faryaneh Poursardar (PI) and Dr. Sampath Jayarathna (Co-PI) at the Department of Computer Science.  Lack of experience in Computer Science students connecting programming skills with real-world problems led us to develop "Drone Programming Studio" control and manipulation of drones with various programming languages in CS programming course projects. One main issue that has been identified in academic institutions is that students do not have a chance to apply hands-on knowledge that combines their coding skills with real-world problems until their senior year. Drone programming projects proposed in this project will be a valuable experience...

2022-07-17: Research Capacity-Building Planning Grant Awarded by NSF CISE Minority-Serving Institutions Program Grant

Image
We are excited to receive 2022 National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering Minority-Serving Institutions (CISE-MSI) Research Expansion Program award worth $400,000 for two years for collaborative research towards " Understanding Human Emotions Associated with Attention Activities in Temporal Domain Utilizing Multimodal Data .”  The goal of the CISE-MSI program is to broaden participation by increasing the number of CISE-funded research projects from MSIs and to develop research capacity toward successful submissions to core CISE programs. MSIs are central to inclusive excellence: they foster innovation, cultivate current and future undergraduate and graduate computer and information science and engineering talent, and bolster long-term U.S. competitiveness. MSI designated schools in this program are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Tribal College & Universities (TCUs)....

2022-07-15: Disinformation Detection and Analytics REU Program - Mid Summer Presentations

Image
The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program provides hands-on learning and research experiences to undergraduates focused on disinformation detection and analytics. This 10-week summer program started on June 6th and it is facilitated at Old Dominion University (ODU) with the Web Science and Digital Libraries (WSDL) Research Group within the Department of Computer Science in partnership with the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center (VMASC) and the Department of Communication Disorders and Special Education. The REU program is funded by the 2022 National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduate Site . There are eight undergraduate students in this program doing projects on disinformation detection and analytics. The REU project mid-summer presentations were held on Friday, July 8th at the Department of Computer Science. The undergraduates of the ODU CS REU program presented their projects, progress, and plans for the next five weeks....

2022-07-14: ACM Symposium on Eye Tracking Research and Applications (ETRA) 2022 Trip Report

Image
The 14th ACM Symposium on Eye Tracking Research and Applications (ETRA 2022) was a fully hybrid conference hosted both in-person and virtually by Seattle Children’s Hospital, Washington, USA, between June 8 - 11, 2022. We ( Bhanuka , Gavindya , Yasasi ) attended paper sessions and keynotes where scientists and practitioners of all disciplines presented their work via Zoom on the Socio platform . ETRA brings together eye-tracking researchers from Computer Science and Psychology/Cognitive Science. For the first time, full papers accepted for ETRA are published through proceedings of the ACM. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the community, authors were given a choice of having their work published in either the Proceedings of the ACM on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (PACMC- GIT) or the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction (PAC- MHCI). The a cceptance rate of ETRA 2022 was 38% for full papers and 42% for short papers. . @ETRA_conferenc...
