2023-01-05: Eight WS-DL Classes Offered for Spring 2023

Seven courses from the Web Science and Digital Libraries (WS-DL) Group will be offered for Spring 2023.  The classes will be a mixture of on-line, f2f, and hybrid. 

• CS 432/532 Web Science, Dr. Faryaneh Poursardar, asynchronous 
  Topics: Python, R, D3, ML, and IR.  
• CS 480/580 Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Vikas Ashok, Tuesday & Thursday, 3:00-4:15pm.  
  Topics: problem representation, problem-solving methods, search, pattern recognition, natural language processing, vision processing, machine learning, and expert systems.
  
• CS 625 Data Visualization, Dr.  Faryaneh Poursardar,  Tuesday & Thursday, 9:30-10:45am, and 1:30-2:45pm. 
  Topics: Tableau, R, Vega-Lite, Observable, Markdown, OpenRefine, data cleaning, visual perception, visualization design, exploratory data analysis, visual storytelling. 
•  CS 725/825 Information Visualization and Visual Analytics, Dr. Michele C. Weigle, Tuesday 4:20-7pm. 
  Topics: Vega-Lite, D3, visual analytics, clustering, interactive visualizations, dashboard design. 
• CS 732/832 Human Computer Interaction, Dr. Sampath Jayarathna, Wednesday 4:20-7:00pm. 
  Topics: Cognitive and social phenomena surrounding human use of computers.  
  
• CS 795/895 Computer Vision, Dr. Vikas Ashok, Tuesday & Thursday 11:00-12:15pm. 
  Topics: Image processing and filters, Edges and features, Interest points and features, Bag of words representation, Convolution neural networks, Object detection, Image formation, 3D reconstruction, Motion Analysis, Light and shading.
  
• CS 795/895 Scientific Writing, Dr. Sampath Jayarathna, Friday 10:30-12:20pm. 
  Topics: Overleaf, Zotero, Mind Mapping, Obsidian, Research Rabbit, Grammarly.   
  
• CS 795/895 Fundamentals of Deep Learning, Dr. Jian Wu, Tuesday 5:45-8:25pm. 
  Topics: loss function and shallow neural models, fully connected neural network (NN), convolutional NN (CNN), recurrent NN (RNN), training, optimization, and backpropagation, regularization and generalization, attention mechanism and transformers. 
  

In addition to the WS-DL courses listed above, Dr. Wu will also be teaching CS 450/550 and Dr. Poursardar will be teaching CS 115 and CS 150.  Dr. Michael L. Nelson will not be teaching this semester and will instead of focus on standing up the new Institute of Data Science.
