2020-08-16: Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) 2020 Trip Report

20th ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries Libraries (JCDL 2020) was hosted virtually (due to the COVID-19 pandemic ) jointly by the School of Information Management at Wuhan University and the School of Public Administration at Northwest University , between August 1 - 5, 2020 in Wuhan, Hubei, China. Similar to last year's conference, we (members of WSDL ) attended paper sessions, workshops (Web Archiving and Digital Libraries), and tutorials, where researchers from multiple disciplines presented their work via Zoom. The theme of this year's conference was "Speedier Innovation, Sustainable Development, Societal Transformation". ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries ( JCDL 2020 )  Doctoral Consortium is a workshop for Ph.D. students from all over the world who are in the early phases of their dissertation work. The goal of this workshop is to help students with their thesis and research plans by providing feedback and general advice in a constructive atmosphere. Here, students present and discuss their research in a supportive atmosphere, with other doctoral students and an international panel of established researchers. The JCDL 2020 Doctoral Consortium took place in two virtual sessions . The first session took place on July 31, from 10.30 PM - 12.00 AM (UTC-4). The second session took place on August 1, from 1:30 AM - 3:00 AM (UTC-4). Session 1 The first session took place with Dr. Xiaozhong Liu from Indiana University, USA , Dr. Wei Lu from Wuhan University, China , and Dr. Jian Qin from Syracuse University, USA as the primary mentors, and Dr. Stephen Downie from University of Illinois, USA ,

2020-08-03: ACM SIGIR 2020 Non-Trip Report

On July 25, more than 1,300 registrants around the world opened their laptops and started attending SIGIR 2020 . Via Zoom and the streaming capabilities of the conference web portal , we were able to watch speakers, raise hands, ask questions, and chat with attendees.  SIGIR 2020 was in Xi'an, China , but few registrants could attend in person due to the travel restrictions imposed to curb the COVID-19 pandemic . The SIGIR 2020 program committee successfully converted their in-person conference to an online variant. They reduced conference fees so more people could attend and made much of the live streaming content available to the public. ACM SIGIR is the premier conference for information retrieval. I have always wanted to attend. I have no papers to present, but Los Alamos National Laboratory was kind enough to pay for my time and attendance. SIGIR 2020 was my first pandemic video conference. I witnessed impressive work in this rapidly changing landscape. The age of ter
